George Washington Carver Senior High School was opened in September, 1958 by the Orleans Parish School Board as a three year high school. It is located on the school site with George Washington Carver Junior High School and Helen S. Edwards Elementary School. Carver Junior (now Carver Middle) was constructed with the same architectural pattern as Carver Senior and seperated only by the boiler room on the ground floor, the libaries on the second floor and a mere concrete wall on the third floor. Together, the George Washington Carver Senior and Junior High Schools were contracted by the Orleans Parish School Board at a cost of:

 

                                      $3,713,119.00

 

In September 1968 Carver Senior High School became a four year high school housing grades nine through twelve.

 

Milton J. Becnel was the first principal of George Washington Carver Senior High School
